Best Mashed Potatoes

The best mashed potatoes for you may be a fat free mashed potato recipe, loaded mashed potatoes or an easy recipe if you don't know how to make mashed potatoes.

Fat Free Mashed Potato Recipe

Potatoes are naturally low calorie and non-fat. It's what we add to our potato recipes that increases the fat content. Here is a mashed potato recipe that is tasty yet fat free.


  • 4 medium potatoes (about 1 1/2 pounds), scrubbed
  • 1 1/4 cups water
  • 4 cloves garlic, minced
  • 4 tablespoons parsley, chopped
  • 3 dashes Tabasco® pepper sauce
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon yellow mustard
  • 2 teaspoons grainy mustard
  • 2 teaspoons prepared horseradish
  • 1/4 cup fat-free sour cream


  1. Pare the potatoes or leave skin on, according to taste. Cut into 1 inch cubes, and place in heavy medium saucepan. Add water, garlic, parsley, Tabasco and salt, bring to a boil over medium-high heat.
  2. Reduce heat, cover and let cook for about 20 minutes, stirring and breaking potatoes up with a fork. Add more hot water if potatoes seem too dry.
  3. Continue stirring and mashing potatoes for about 5 minutes until the water is absorbed and the potatoes are soft and lumpy.
  4. Remove from heat, stir in the mustards, horseradish and sour cream.

Yield: 4 - 6 servings

Adding garlic, cheese, bacon and other yummy toppings make your mashed potatoes your own specialty!

Garlic Mashed Potatoes

We realize that two of our three best mashed potatoes recipes include garlic! What can I say? We love the flavor. You can certainly omit it if you don't.


  • 1 to 3 whole garlic heads
  • 1/2 to 1-1/2 tablespoons olive oil
  • Black pepper to taste
  • 4 pounds potatoes
  • 6 tablespoons butter
  • 2 teaspoons white pepper
  • 2 teaspoons salt
  • 2/3 cup milk


  1. For roasted garlic, cut off garlic heads to expose the cloves. Drizzle 1/2 tablespoon olive oil over each head and sprinkle with black pepper.
  2. Add 1/2 inch water to a pan, and place garlic in it. Bring to a boil on top of stove, then place in oven for 45 minutes. Cool and push through a sieve.
  3. Peel potatoes and cook covered in water until they can be broken apart with a fork.
  4. Mash potatoes and add all ingredients, including heads of roasted garlic. Combine well. Serve with butter, or gravy.

Loaded Mashed Potatoes

This is one of our best mashed potatoes recipes to create if you want to serve a large family or group AND have lots of people asking you for your recipe.


  • 5 pound bag potatoes, peeled
  • 1 cup milk
  • 1 cup heavy cream
  • 6 ounces butter
  • 6 ounces aged cheddar cheese, shredded
  • 4 ounces cooked bacon, chopped
  • 2 ounces green onions, chopped
  • 2 teaspoons salt
  • 1 teaspoon ground black pepper


  1. Bring large pot of water to boil; add potatoes and cook until tender. Drain well.
  2. In medium saucepan, heat milk, cream and butter until hot.
  3. Place cooked potatoes in mixing bowl. Mix with paddle attachment until mashed. Add hot cream mixture and mix until blended.
  4. Add cheese, bacon and green onions. Season with salt and pepper.

Yield: 12, 1-cup servings
