An Au Gratin potatoes recipe is a rather simple recipe yet a very satisfying combination of potatoes, butter, milk or cream and your favorite seasonings.
Cheese is often added to Potatoes Au Gratin however is not always included. You can "tweak" any gratin to make it your own. This recipe includes both garlic and nutmeg.
If you often have lots of potatoes to peel, consider an Electric Potato Peeler.
Preheat your oven to 375 degrees F.
Rub the inside of your au gratin dish or other eight cup baking dish with the cut garlic halves. Discard garlic. Use 1 tablespoon of butter to coat the inside of the baking dish.
In a large cooking pot, combine the cream, whole milk, minced garlic, grated nutmeg, salt, pepper and the rest of of the butter.
Bring the milk mixture to a low simmer. Stir frequently.
Peel and slice the potatoes into even slices while the milk mixture comes to a simmer. Drop the potato slices into the milk mixture as you peel and slice them. Cover the cooking pot and simmer for about 3 minutes.
Using a slotted spoon, transfer the potato slices to your prepared au gratin baking dish.
You can choose to overlap the slices to create an attractive presentation.
Pour the milk mixture over the potatoes and cover with "buttered" aluminum foil.
Bake covered at 375 degrees for forty minutes; remove the aluminum foil and bake for twenty minutes longer.
Remove your Garlic Au Gratin potatoes recipe from the over. Allow to stand for about ten minutes.
There are many ways to make your au gratin potatoes unique. With the addition of one or two added ingredients, you can enjoy this recipe with the addition of your favorite flavors.
