Westbend Cookware

Westbend cookware has been synonymous with high quality and innovation since the start of the twentieth century, when a group of businessman set up a company making simple plates and cups in Wisconsin.

Westbend Cookware Westbend's first major invention was the waterless cooker which revolutionized kitchens all over the country. The legacy of this invention from 1920 can be seen in crock pots and waterless steamers today. Westbend products are now offered under several names including Regal Ware and American Kitchen. They provide many lines of cookware, and tend to be known for some of the best stainless steel cookware.

Waterless Cookware

If you mention Westbend cookware to any chef, the first thing that they’ll talk to you about is the waterless cooker. This invention allowed a family to cook their whole meal using just one pan. The simple principle behind the waterless cooker was that all food contains moisture in some way, and that cooking food releases this water in the form of steam. By completely sealing the food in, the steam generated by the moisture in the food was used to cook it without having to add extra water. This meant that foods like hams and vegetables could be steamed for the first time without any water in just one pan. This revolutionary technique is still used in their slow cooker range and it has been scientifically proven to retain more vitamins and minerals than boiling or traditional steaming methods.

The invention of the waterless cooker gave Westbend a foothold in the cookware market, and the brand grew steadily until it was bought out by Regal Ware in 2002. You will find some products with the Regal Ware label while other items retain the Westbend logo. Westbend continues to produce new ideas in cookware, such as:

The Westbend cookware focus has always been on trying to make cooking healthier. For example, their range of pots and pans is made from stainless steel. Using stainless steel can help you cook healthily because:

  1. It cooks the food more evenly than plain aluminium. That even heat distribution, the key to healthy cooking, allows you to use the natural oils and fats in foods such as meat and fish to cook your meal. This allows you to cut down on the amount of additional oils you need to add to your meal. It also means that you can be sure that all of your meat will be cooked through properly and that all harmful bacteria will have been neutralized.
  2. It doesn’t contain non-stick coating. While non-stick pans are great for easy cooking and easy clean up, the non-stick coating used by most cookware manufacturers will start to come away from the pan after heavy usage. Both the adhesive used to stick the coating to the pan and the coating itself can be dangerous to humans if consumed, and there is a higher chance of this happening when the non-stick coating starts to degrade. Westbend stainless steel pans avoid this problem because they don’t use non-stick coatings.

As with any stainless steel cookware, you’ll need to learn how to care for it properly to avoid damaging the metal and reducing the effectiveness of the cookware.

Whether you’re looking to replace a few pots and pans or wanting to completely restock your whole kitchen, think about buying Westbend cookware to help you cook more efficiently and healthily. While the technology has moved on from the early twentieth century waterless cookers, their dedication to high quality and innovation in the kitchen remains the same.
