How to Peel Potatoes

Is There More Than One Way
To Peel a Potato?

Some things, like how to peel potatoes, seem simple. Yet if you have never been taught the best way, or that there are several ways to peel potatoes, here's how.

How to Peel Potatoes Here are some basic tips on how to peel potatoes
  • Soaking potatoes in cold water for a few minutes before peeling them make them easier to peel.
  • Choose a potato peeler that is right for your task. A swivel blade potato peeler that allows you to remove the peel on both the up and down stroke is usually the best choice. If you are peeling large amounts of potatoes, an electric potato peeler could be your best choice.
  • If using a hand-help potato peeler, hold the peeler in one hand and the potato in the other hand.
  • Move the peeler in an up and down motion (if using the swivel potato peeler) being careful to go slowly and not cut yourself.
  • Rotate the potato until all sides are peeled, trying not too remove too much of the potato flesh with the potato peels.
  • Rinse the peeled potato to remove any remaining dirt.

Don't even think about peeling potatoes that are dirty. Whether freshly harvested potatoes from your garden or potatoes purchased from your local grocery, they need a good scrubbing before they are peeled.

Another reason to be sure your potatoes are very clean before you peel them, is that you can make some great potato peel recipes ....no part of the potato needs to be wasted!

Also, there is more than one way to peel a potato. Take a look at an interesting idea.
