a Baked Potato Recipe

Baked potato recipes are some of the easiest to prepare yet extremely versatile and nutritious. Learn how to bake a potato in several ways.

Basic Baked Potato:

Select evenly-shaped potatoes and scrub them well. One medium to large potato is one serving.

Oven Baked Potatoes

Place clean potatoes directly on the baking rack or in a baking pan. Bake at 350 - 375 degrees for 90 minutes.

Tips:

  • Rub a little salt into the skins before baking to make them extra crispy.
  • A little olive oil brushed on the skins before baking will result in a crispy potato skin.
  • While it is popular to wrap baking potatoes in aluminum foil, the result is a "steamed" potato rather than a baked potato.
  • If cooking an ovenful of potatoes, increase the temperature to 425 degrees.
  • Metal skewers or baking prongs pushed through the potatoes will reduce the cooking time by up to a quarter.
When the baked potatoes are cooked (prick with a fork to check for tenderness), make a crosswise slit in the top of each potato and squeeze gently to open out the cut area. Place a pat of butter in the opening if desired. Serve immediately.

Microwave Baked Potatoes

Microwaving your potatoes will save time however a baked potato made in the microwave oven will not have a crispy skin.

Scrub the potatoes, then dry and prick each one several times with a fork.(a baking potato can explode in the microwave if the skin is not pricked). Cook one potato for 6 minutes on full power. If your microwave oven does not have a turntable, turn half way through cooking. Allow to stand for 1 – 2 minutes before serving.

If you are preparing more than one potato at a time, increase the cooking time accordingly.

baked potato recipes A baked potato is nature’s "mini-casserole." This edible, self-contained dish can hold an unending variety of hearty stuffings. Slice lengthwise to open your baked potato and make it into a meal. Here are just a few delicious ways to do it:

  • Add steamed broccoli, top with shredded cheese and pop back into the oven until the cheese melts.
  • Open a can of pre-prepared chili, heat it for a couple of minutes in the microwave, top your baked potato and add sour cream or cheese.

  • Salsa baked potato recipe: top your baked potato with 2 Tbls. of prepared salsa, 2 teaspoons sour cream and sprinkle with shredded Monterey Jack cheese.
